POLICE made a major breakthrough yesterday, when four men believed to be in possession of stolen goods, were arrested. Items worth approximately R25 000 were seized during the arrest.
Information received from various informants led the members of the Greenwood Park SAPS Crime Prevention Unit and the Crime Intelligence Unit to a property in uMgeni Park, where various items were recovered. The alleged stolen property then led authorities to a second property in central Durban, where additional items were recovered and prompted the search and seizure at a third property in Newlands, where the bulk of the alleged stolen items were recovered.
According to W/O Lutchman Singh, of the Greenwood Park SAPS, some of the items seized include bicycles, brush cutters, various car parts, welding tools, assorted jewelry, DVDs and 25 cartons of illegal imported cigarettes.
A case has been opened at the station and the arrested have been charged with possession of suspected goods.
It is believed that the men are linked to the recent spike of high end mountain bike thefts experienced between July and August in Durban North.
Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said that they suspect that a syndicate was operating in the area, as there was a high demand for the expensive mountain bikes.
