uMhlanga church robbed of R56 600

Brazen thieves rob uMhlanga church twice in the space of a week.

AN uMhlanga church has fallen victim to burglars who made off with more than R56 000 worth of goods and cash. Police believe the theft occurred between Saturday afternoon (25 October) and Sunday morning (26 October). Thieves used a bolt cutter to gain entry into the Destiny Harvest Church on Meridian Drive and stole a number of items including the church’s petty cash box which contained an undisclosed amount of cash.

This was the second robbery at the church in a space of a week. Police believe the two incidents are linked.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS called the thefts ‘despicable’.

“The suspects made off with a MacBook pro, a flat screen TV, a  PVR decoder and the church’s petty cash box, totalling R56 640. This is the second time the church was robbed, last week thieves used a bolt cutter again and stole the sound equipment.

“It’s sad that there is no sanctity or respect shown for religious institutions. This was just despicable,” Deokaran concluded.
