Illegal parking frustrates residents

"It is totally inconsiderate, as they knowingly put other people in danger," said Durban North resident, Alan Jarvis.

INCONSIDERATE motorists have earned the ire of fellow residents as dangerous parking in Durban North seems to have become a trend in recent months.

Alan Jarvis, who has been a resident for 20 years, has highlighted several locations where inconsiderate drivers have been parking in dangerous spots. “On Adelaide Tambo Drive people park outside of the centre on the red line, which actually prohibits stopping and parking, and when you attempt to exit the legal parking area your view is hindered. You are very likely of being wiped out by a taxi, if you are not careful,” said Jarvis.

Other problem areas include Mackeurtan Avenue and the pavement opposite the Fair Way convenience centre. “It is totally inconsiderate, as they knowingly put other people in danger. I have approached the offenders and politely asked them to move, but then they respond with aggression and rude signs.

“I have also reported it to the Metro Police, and the authorities have then chased them from the scene, but by the next day they are back again. Something has to be done before someone dies,” he added.

Shaun Ryley, the local ward councillor, emphasised that residents need to report vehicles that are obstructing traffic flow, or are parked in contravention of the Road Traffic Act or the city’s by-laws to Metro Police (031 361 0000), as many of the incidences go unreported.  “The problem is that the traffic and city by-laws can only be enforced by Metro Police.

“People need to complain and report whenever they see such contraventions, as it will discourage such behaviour and enable authorities to enforce the law,” said Ryley.

He added that he would escalate the issue to Metro Police Senior Superintendent, Parboo Sewpersad.
