UMHLANGA Manors residents have emerged victorious in their battle against the application to install a MTN cell mast. Last year, the plan earned the ire of residents who reacted angrily to plans to build the 25 meter high cell mast in close proximity to residents’ homes.

Richard Edwards, chairman of the Umhlanga Manors Homeowners Forum, said he had received an email from the eThekwini Municipality saying the application had been refused. He described the victory as a ‘David vs Goliath’ story.

“We are absolutely delighted with this outcome. Very few of these mast proposals are ever refused. However, Umhlanga Manors is a very closely knit community, all residents refused to be intimidated by a massive multi-national company with the resources of MTN, and resolutely stood together as one voice, vehemently objecting to this ridiculous siting of a mast, a few meters away from people’s homes.

“We also secured the services of a town planner to assist us in our objections, as well as two of our residents who are attorneys. This is like a David and Goliath story,” he enthused.

Edwards had told Northglen News last year that the mast application posed serious concerns.
