Striking taxi drivers stone cars, cause traffic delays

Chaos in city CBD as strikers turn violent.

SCORES of Durban taxi operators marched through the city’s CBD this morning, stoning municipal cars and burning tyres as they went. The protesters have now congregated at the old drive-in site, where a fleet of impounded minibus taxis stand under police guard.

Workers in the taxi industry expressed anger at Metro Police, claiming traffic laws target them unfairly.

They are demanding that authorities release the nearly 200 taxis impounded by Metro Police.

Police blocked roads in the strikers’ vicinity to protect motorists from coming under attack.

Metro Police sources confirmed that slow-moving traffic was as a result of road blockades that had been reported on a number of routes, including the M4 southern freeway and North Coast Road. The strike has also left hundreds of people stranded.
