Three suspects injured in shootout

A high-speed chase on the highway led to a shootout.

A MOTORIST is lucky to be alive after he was caught up in a gun battle between suspected hijackers and police on the M25 Highway on Friday evening. The action started when a Greenwood Park Police vehicle spotted a hijacked vehicle along North Coast Road at about 9.15pm.

“The officers were pursuing the vehicle along the M25 highway when the suspects opened fired on police, who returned fire. One of the suspects, who was shot and injured in the knee, was arrested. The others fled and abandoned the vehicle. During the shootout, the suspects allegedly shot at a passing vehicle and damaged its windscreen. The driver was fortunately not injured.

“A case of attempted murder was opened at the Greenwood Park Police Station. Police are still on the trail of the men who fled,” said Col Jay Naicker, provincial police spokesman.
