30 motorists nabbed for speeding on URD

Metro Police say speeding on Umhlanga Rocks Drive was a cause for concern.

A TOTAL of 30 motorists were fined for speeding on Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Tuesday afternoon. The operation, which lasted just under three hours, saw one motorist fined R1 500 for travelling at 110km per hour in a 60km zone. A Metro Police officer, who could not be named, said with the high number of accidents on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, more speeds cameras were needed.

“Every single driver we pulled over was going over 85km per hour in the 60km zone. Consider that this operation was also done during the day. We have received several complaints about speeding in the area, specifically on Umhlanga Rocks Drive. Some residents pulled over just to thank us for trapping drivers who flouted the speed limit,” the officer said.

In March this year, 35 motorists were fined for speeding by Metro Police on Adelaide Thambo (Kensington) Drive. A few days later, a similar operation, this time by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), nabbed more than 50 errant drivers.
