Mayor wishes all Hindus a happy Diwali
Nxumalo wishes to remind residents to use fireworks responsibly and to dispose of the fireworks and packaging appropriately.
ETHEKWINI Mayor, James Nxumalo, has extended best wishes to all Hindu residents celebrating Diwali.
“For some people, Diwali marks the start of a new year and a new beginning. It is a time for personal reflection and a time to celebrate and give thanks for successes and accomplishments. It is a time to remember the underprivileged and contribute to the wellbeing of society through charitable gestures. Diwali signifies a fresh start and the triumph of good over evil,” said Nxumalo.
The city appreciates that, as the festive season approaches, this is also the time when residents use fireworks. Nxumalo wishes to remind residents to use fireworks responsibly and to dispose of the fireworks and packaging appropriately.
“Let us also remember to ensure our pets are not harmed as we indulge in the festivities. Ensure that they are safe and away from fireworks as these can adversely affect them. Durban is a diverse city, a melting pot of cultures and religions. I encourage all residents to embrace our city’s uniqueness by embracing other cultures and religions,” he said.
Low-hazard fireworks, such as fountains, lawn lights and sparklers, can be lit in private homes. Fireworks such as air bombs, supersonic bangs, sound shells, fountain whistles and screeches are prohibited as they cause a disturbance and are a nuisance to neighbours. The Fireworks Policy Guidelines call for children under 16 years of age to be properly supervised by an adult when letting off fireworks.
Fireworks must be detonated as far away as possible from hospitals, clinics, petrol service stations, old age and nursing homes, animal welfare organisations and institutions.
