Police clamp down on road carnage
Seven drunken drivers were arrested along the M41 in uMhlanga during a road block in less than an hour.

AUTHORITIES waged war against road carnage last night with a road block along the M41 in uMhlanga. After less than an hour police had arrested seven people for driving under the influence.
The roadblock organised by the Durban North SAPS and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) began just after 9pm.
According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North Police Station, the road blocks were regularly implemented, but would be increased with the festive season.
“The aim is to prevent road carnage. Despite all the warnings people are still being irresponsible. Some of the people we arrested tonight were four or five times over the legal limit,” he said.
In February this year, a zero alcohol level was proposed, which was outlined in the Draft National Road Traffic Amendment Bill.
The proposed new section of law states: “Driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs having a narcotic effect (is) prohibited”.
Current law allows drivers to have up to 0.05g of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
