THE man who was arrested in connection with the alleged killing of two cyclists on the M4 on Sunday morning has been released on bail. Omesh Ramnarain (32) faced charges of drunken driving and culpable homicide and was released on R10 000 bail, with no conditions.

The Phoenix resident was driving his Golf GTI when he collided with Richard da Silva (46) of Glen Anil and Jared Dwyer (36) of Glenwood, who were part of a group of around 30 cyclists from the Kings Park Cycling Club. Paramedics declared both cyclists dead on the scene.

On Monday, RTI spokesman, Zinhle Mngomezulu, said cyclists weren’t allowed on a freeway, saying any cyclists on the freeway were liable to be charged.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, confirmed that Ramnarain had been granted bail.

“There were no bail conditions set down for him, but he cannot leave the city without prior consent from the investigating officer.  A second driver who smashed into the police vehicle at the scene was also released on bail of R3 000,” Deokaran said.
