Toll route hike expected for March

SANRAL has announced a planned increase of all toll fees for national routes, just as the Easter weekend approaches.

THE public will have to dig deeper into their pockets when embarking on long distance trips, as The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) announced this week that they will be increasing toll fees from 1 March.

This comes as the annual Easter weekend approaches.

According to SANRAL, the increase – which will apply to all national routes – was made according to the last 12 months’ consumer pricing index (CPI) measures.

Spokesperson, Vusi Mona, said the change would also incorporate an increase in the e-tolls fees launched in 2013, despite a massive outcry from the public objecting to e-tolls even before the rollout.

Mona could not confirm the percentage of the increase, but insisted that it would be matched  to the CPI changes. CPI increases over the year ranged from 4.4 to 5.2 percent, reported local media.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) said the public could expect an increase between two and eight percent.
