A MAN has opened a case of assault with the Durban North SAPS after he claims he was beaten with metal pipes by petrol attendants at a service station on Swapo Road (Broadway) last Wednesday. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the local police station, the man was inebriated at the time of the assault.

“He only opened the case on Tuesday, 5 April, and says he was drunk at the time of the incident. He claims he was walking along with his friend, who was also reportedly drunk, and decided to sit down at a bus shelter not far from the station. He then began urinating in public, not knowing he was relieving himself in full view of stunned onlookers.

“According to the victim, one petrol attendant warned him to stop what was he was doing and move away. He then remembers being surrounded by several petrol attendants who allegedly beat him with metal pipes. He has opened a case of assault GBH, or assault causing grievous bodily harm,” he said.

Deokaran added that police were still investigating the case.
