Durban North man called ‘black cockroach’ in parking space row

Disabled parking spot row turns racial outside Glenashley supermarket.

A DURBAN North man who was racially abused in the parking lot of Eastman’s SPAR has taken to Facebook to vent his feelings about his ordeal. Siyabonga Ndlovu, who only has partial use of his legs, said he was called a ‘black cockroach’ by an elderly woman who accused him of using the disabled parking pay illegally.

Ndlovu said he had parked in the bay but did not take out his wheelchair from the boot when his girlfriend decided to run into the store quickly.

“This lady came to my car banging and scratching my car, saying the one and only parking for disabled at Glenashley Spar is for whites only. She said, ‘Move your bloody car you black cockroach, this parking is for disabled white people only.’  She didn’t care about the disabled parking disc displayed on my car. I couldn’t take it, and I said, ‘You wish this was a boeremag Volkstaat’,” Ndlovu said.

Ndlovu took photos of his disabled sticker as well as the woman who scratched his car and racially abused him.

“Some people are still clearly stuck in the past. Racism is a crime,” he said.

Gavin East, manager of the SPAR, said he became aware of the incident after the social media post gained traction.

“When I asked the car guard about the incident, he claimed he did not see a disabled sticker but when he approached the car, he saw the wheelchair in the back of the vehicle. I’m not aware of what was said between the two parties,” he said.
