Durban North baby home warns of scam using dating sites

The home that cares for vulnerable and abandoned babies, recently put up a statement calling out the scam.

THE Baby Home Durban North is warning residents and the greater Durban community of a fundraising scam falsely using their details.

The home, which helps provide care and a safe environment for vulnerable and abandoned babies, recently put up a statement on their official page calling out the scam.

What is more, the scammers are using popular dating sites in the scam.

Jo Teunissen, who runs the baby home, said the person falsely claims to work for the home and is involved in fundraising projects.

“This person is approaching people on dating sites, asking for money for our children and making up stories about birthdays, cakes, hospital stays and other needs. Please know that this person does not work for The Baby Home and is not fundraising on our behalf,” she said.

Teunissen added that the Baby Home Durban North has one official account and will never ask anyone to deposit money into another account, send money to a personal account, or use Cash Send or similar cash transfers on their behalf.

“If anyone approaches you claiming to represent us and asks for money in any other way, please do not send anything. Take screenshots, keep their details, block and report them, and please let us know so that we can follow it up,” she said.
