Northglen News welcomes new journalist
New journalist joins the team as Mariclair Smit bids us a fond farewell.
AFTER working at the Northglen News for almost two years, Mariclair Smit will be leaving us. The feisty journalist who remains part of the Caxton team but at a different branch, has, over the years amassed a string of contacts, all of whom gave her hundreds of stories, some sad, others happy.
Reminiscing about her time at the Northglen News, Smit said,“The most heart-breaking story that I had to cover was definitely the disappearance of Brenda Scriven. I had to pluck up the courage to go and speak to the family at this difficult time. It was incredible to see the community come together and support the family. Also, as an animal lover it was devastating to witness the severe neglect of four dogs in Glen Anil earlier this year. They were all riddled with mange and starving, almost to a point of death. Gunner, the weakest of the lot had to be carried as he was far too weak to support his own weight,”she said.
“ Luckily that story had a happy ending. They have all found loving homes with some amazing people.”
Smit is being replaced by journalist, Se-Anne Rall who comes to Caxton from another community newspaper group after working there for eight years.
The digitally savvy Rall, who also happens to be a mother of two, joins us at a time when the Northglen News’s online platform, www.northglennews.co.za is now in full swing amassing more than 200 000 page views a month.
So keep an eye on the Northglen News newspaper that hits the road every Tuesday and our website (www.northglennews.co.za) that’s up and running 24/7.
