Durban loses rights to host Commonwealth Games

A replacement for the games has yet to be named by the CGF.

DURBAN has lost the bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The decision was made earlier today at a press briefing. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will release a press statement later today confirming that Durban will not host the sporting spectacle in 2022.

When Durban was chosen, it was the only candidate city after Edmonton in Canada pulled out, saying it would cost too much to host the games.

Durban’s chances of remaining as host was placed in doubt when government failed to put up the necessary financial guarantees to ensure the city held onto the hosting right, which was officially announced in September 2015.

A replacement for the 2022 games has yet to be named by the CGF but it’s understood Liverpool is one of the cities in the running.
