WATCH: Protest action affects traffic on N2 after uMhlanga

Protesters have blocked two lanes on the N2 going north, reducing motorists to a single lane and severely affecting traffic.

DISGRUNTLED members of the Blackburn Village Informal Settlement have descended onto the N2 freeway just after the uMhlanga exit to protest. Residents are unhappy that their electricity supply has been cut off for the few days.

Protesters have blocked two lanes on the N2 going north, reducing motorists to a single lane and severely affecting traffic.

According to uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, the municipality’s electricity department are addressing the issue.

“The City is aware of the issue and have dispatched technicians to deal with the problem. Due to illegal connections, the system was affected but the problem is not as severe as earlier this year where a transformer blew,” he said.

Earlier this year, residents spoke to Northglen News explaining why they block the freeway.

Hundreds of illegal connections dot the heavily populated settlement. Some of the connections are sellotaped together with long thin wires placed along the ground or sometimes buried under sand.
