25 drunk drivers nabbed on M4

The operation was held on M4 Ruth First Highway near the Virginia off-ramp.

A TOTAL of 25 people were detained by the Durban North SAPS in an extensive operation against drunk driving on Friday night.

The operation was held on M4 Ruth First Highway near the Virginia off-ramp.

“The Durban North SAPS jointly with Metro Police, conducted a drunk driving operation on the M4,” confirmed Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station.

“We arrested 25 people on the night and on this stretch alone, we’ve arrested more than 150 people this year. We’ve sent out several warnings but despite this drivers have still been breaking the law. Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanour, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice,” Deokaran said.

Last month, Deokaran said police have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving.

“Appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ are ridiculous,” he said.
