Kyéta ready for Australian challenge

La Lucia resident selected for the South African senior team at the Lifesaving World Championships (LWC).

LA Lucia resident, Kyéta Purchase is one of the most decorated athletes competing at this year’s Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) in Adelaide (Australia). The 19-year-old is a member of the South African senior team at the champs.

Purchase, has been capped for marathon paddling, surfski paddling and lifesaving (at a junior level) and has won a world title and multiple medals in her fledgling career.

The Marine Surf Lifesaving Club member will be leaving two weeks before the rest of the South African team in order to acclimatise and gear up for her two world champs events, Ironwoman and ski.

“This is my second world champs, I represented the South African junior team in 2014 in France where I won seven medals. I’m well aware the senior competition is going to be a wholly different kettle of fish. Lifesaving is one of Australia’s biggest sports so their athletes will be fiercely competitive on home soil.

“It’s difficult to say I will definitely win a medal at the LWC because I’m racing the best in the world but I’ve set myself goals. I’d like to make the finals of the Ironwoman competition and medal in the surfski event. I’m quietly confident in my abilities and I hope to make everyone proud,” she said.

Purchase also thanked her coaches, Russel Sadler (lifesaving) and Lee McGregor (paddling) for their help in getting her prepared for the competition in Australia.
