eMdloti parents concerned over uMhlanga parks safety

A CONCERNED mother has lambasted the City for dragging its feet after her daughter was injured at a community park in uMhlanga.
On Wednesday, 21 November four-year-old Anabella Fella’s father took her to play at Kingston Drive Park. Unaware of the danger, the little girl happily jumped on the swing and began swinging.
Minutes into her ride, the wooden pole that supports the swing collapsed.
“She was on one of the swings which were meant to be secured by the pole when it collapsed, scratching her forehead. Fortunately the log missed her side just by a few millimeters otherwise she would have been critically injured,” said her mother, Innessa Fella.
Fella went on to say, “One would think parks are safe. The screw that was meant to secure the log is rusted and wasn’t even the right size.”

After the incident the concerned mother said she contacted the City asking them to do regular safety checks at parks. “I contacted the Parks Department on Thursday, 22 November. I was told that safety checks should be performed once a month. What I am not sure of is whether this is done,” she said.
When the Northglen News visited the Kingston Drive Park six days later, the broken swing was still not removed.
“They also said they would be sending someone to remove the collapsed swing before it injures more children. I’m just concerned about their safety, especially because Ana was lucky enough to escape with minor injuries,” added Fella.
At the time of publication the City had not commented on the matter.
