Sonny elected as president of world karate body

Durban North resident named President of the Commonwealth Karate Nations of the World.

HISTORY was made last weekend as South Africa’s karate legend, Sonny Pillay, was elected unopposed as President of the Commonwealth Karate Nations of the World.

The Durban North resident has been at the helm of karate South Africa (KSA) for the past eight years.

The elections chaired by acting President Raghupathy Thiagarajan (India) was conducted in Durban and attended by delegates from several Commonwealth countries, including Bangladesh, England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Mozambique, India, Botswana and Namibia among several others.

“It is with great pride the huge confidence placed in my ability to lead the Commonwealth karate federation given the overwhelming support by the leaders of the Commonwealth karate nations. I promise to lead with dignity and integrity especially in so far as good governance is concerned,” he said.

Pillay, who is the only South African to be appointed on the World Karate Federation (WKF) Technical board has been tasked with the help of the CKF executive to gain recognition from the Commonwealth games federation (CGF).
