BAN Animal Trading SA, an animal rights activist group, are planning to hold a protest outside Durban’s Greyville Racecourse on Saturday morning.

According to Durban North resident and member of organisation, Prathna Singh, the peaceful protest is against one of South Africa’s biggest horse racing events, the Vodacom Durban July.

The animal rights organisation, who have previously held protests outside Ushaka Marine World (Empty the Tanks), the Natal Lion Park and various circuses using animals, said their aim is to end animal exploitation through facilitating positive and meaningful change.

“We held a protest last year which was very successful where we educated the public about the horse racing industry. The horses at these types of events are treated as commodities for profit and are being exploited. We’ve heard some horror stories about how horses are treated while training for the races.

“We’ve got permission from the City and informed the police we will be protesting on Gladys Manzi Road and Mitchell Crescent on Saturday and we encourage anyone who wants to show solidarity with our cause to join,” she said.
