VIDEOS: Situation worsens on M4 prompting fear for residents, hotels

Ward councillor, Nicole Bollman said there are two areas for concern with residential and hotel properties affected.

THERE is more concern for properties below and behind the M4 Ruth First Highway after a large section of the road washed away on Wednesday morning due to heavy rains.

Repair work to the damaged section of the M4 has been halted due to the inclement weather and two homes in uMhlanga were evacuated on Wednesday morning as a safety measure.

The stormwater pipe which runs under Andre Fraser’s property has led to soil erosion on the edge of his property. Speaking to Northglen News earlier he said the City was doing everything they could to divert water away from the stormwater drain.

Also an area for concern are two resorts below the M4. Nasreen Suliman, the acting general manager of the Breakers Resort explains how the partial collapse has affected their property.

Ward councillor, Nicole Bollman, said she had been in contact with Metro Police and the eThekwini Fire Department who had closed a small part of the turning circle on Lagoon Drive.

“The situation has worsened exponentially and the area of the collapse has widened. In the footage yesterday, the bank on the west side has collapsed even more which is a cause of concern for the properties on either side of the M4. On Lagoon Drive, the fire department has done an investigation and deemed the area safe however a small part of the turning circle on Lagoon Drive has been closed because of a deluge of sand. Of course the situation could change at any moment which is a cause for concern,” she said.

There is added concern for Umhlanga Reserve which has also been affected by the collapse.
