Northlands trio net KZN softball places

The trio who represent the school softball team also received their KZN colours.

THREE Northlands Girls’ High School learners, Ziyaadah Brennan (Grade 12), Kayla Berkenshaw (Grade 11) and Shreya Barath (Grade 9) were selected for the KwaZulu-Natal softball teams in their various age groups recently. Brennan was selected for the open team, Berkenshaw was selected for the U17 team and Barath was selected for the U15 team.

The trio who represent the school softball team also received their KZN colours. What is more the trio are the only learners from the school to make a KZN team.

“I was super proud of making the KZN squad because that was my goal at the beginning of the year. I’ve now set myself the goal of hitting a home run at the upcoming inter-provincial tournament (IPT). As a team we’ve set ourselves the target of bringing home gold,” Brennan explained.

Fellow learner, Kayla Berkenshaw said she too had set herself the goal of hitting a home run at the IPT.

“I’ve managed to hit one in practice but it would be great to do out in a match that counts,” Berkenshaw said.

Speaking on her selection Berkenshaw said the selection was a huge honour.

“I’ve received my KZN colours since Grade 9 and I’m just as nervous and anxious when they announce the squads. Making the team still gives me the butterflies of excitement like the first time I made a KZN squad. I hope to have a successful IPT competition and take my form into next year’s games as well,” she said.

Barath, who plays pitcher for her school, says the ultra-competitive school league has helped her game immensely.

“We play with five other teams in the league and it’s been pretty beneficial to me to have that really competitive league. Our school team finished in the lower half of the table this year but it was a huge learning curve for someone like me who is very new to the sport. Also my teammates have been a great help and support system. For me softball is about going out there, having fun and enjoying the game,” she explained.
