Stretch for a smile with Durban North pilates fundraiser
The class will be hosted online via Zoom on Saturday, 19 September at 9.30am.
IN celebration of Pharmacists Month, the South African Association of Hospital and Institutional Pharmacists (SAAHIP) has partnered with a Durban North based pilates studio to host Stretch for a Smile, a pilates class in support of Operation Smile.
All proceeds from the class will go toward ‘donating a smile’- paying for a life-saving cleft pallet surgery for a child in need. The class will be hosted online via Zoom on Saturday, 19 September at 9.30am.
Participants will need to book via the Peach Pilates website prior to the class to receive the Zoom link via email. Recordings of the class will be sent on request to those who can’t attend the class.

The cost of the class is R100, although donors who want to give more are welcome to do so, said Sarah Marshall of Peach Pilates.
“We are so excited to be part of such a good cause. Cleft pallet is life threatening for the children, so more than donating a smile, it’s like donating a life. It must be terrible for people who can’t afford the procedure,” she added.
The cost of one procedure is R5500, said pharmacist, Terishka Maharajh, of SAAHIP.
“Every year we donate to Operation Smile at a national level. This year pharmacy month has been cancelled because of the pandemic. As pharmacists we are part of the multi disciplinary team, but we are not part of the surgery team, so this is our way of giving back to the medical professionals that we are associated with. Given the pandemic, a lot of people are struggling financially, any amount will help,”said Maharajh.

“We know there is donor fatigue at the moment with the pandemic and everyone is trying to do the best they can. That’s why we wanted to set the price at R100 so people don’t feel like it’s out of their grasp. People are also welcome to donate without attending the class or to donate on behalf of a family member who wants to take the class,” added Marshall.
