Fire breaks out in Sea Cow Lake settlement

Andreas Mathios of Blue Security said he saw the fire at about 1.30am while he was responding to a call out.

SEVERAL shacks went up in flames when a fire broke out at an informal settlement on Sea Cow Lake Road, north of Durban, in the early hours of today (29 December).

Andreas Mathios of Blue Security said he saw the fire at about 1.30am.

“I was on my way to a call out when I spotted the shacks on fire. I phoned the fire department and notified the Blue Security Control Room that there was a fire,” he said.

Mathios said about 10 shacks were destroyed while he was on the scene.

“It was well contained by the time I got there. Some of the shacks were well alight and it was spreading very quickly. The fire department was fantastic. The fire would have spread if they hadn’t gotten there quick enough. They sent multiple units. When I was there one fire truck arrived and within three minutes another arrived. I think they saved a lot of lives,” he said.

According to Mathios, no one was injured in the fire.

“There were no reports of injuries at the scene when I was there. I was there for about 50 minutes,” he said.

“One of the residents said an illegal collection cause the fire,” added Mathios.
