Widespread streetlight faults cause concern in eMdloti
There are broken street lights along Main Road, Bellamont Road, North Beach Road and South Beach Road.
RESIDENTS are at their wits end as broken streetlights have left extensive parts of eMdloti in darkness for more than a year.
Bellamont Road resident, Bev Kirby said there are broken street lights along the road as motorists enter eMdloti from the N2 and M4 highways.
What’s more, broken street lights along Main Road, Bellamont Road, North Beach Road and South Beach Road raise safety concerns as motorists and pedestrians are in the dark while passing sections of thick bush.

“The non-functioning street lights affect the eMdloti residents a lot, because as you come off either the N2 or M4, immediately the faulty lights start. Then up Bellamont Road from the bottom and all along the top, the entire road, has no lights. It is pitch dark and there is bush everywhere, making the area extremely vulnerable and dangerous. Then all along North and South Beach Roads, the majority of street lights are not working,” she said.
Kirby said street lights had been broken in the area for more than a year.
“There have been break-ins and thefts in the area,” she added.
Another concern for Kirby is that street lights are out at both the North and South Beach car parks.

Ward 58 councillor, Geoff Pullan said he had reported the problem.
“Residents are listing all the street lights out of order, which must help the electricity department. The worry, in these uncertain times, is that the poor street lighting can lead to more crime and road accidents,”he said.
