WATCH: Illegal dumping in Kenville angers ratepayers association

The association recently called in Durban Solid Waste (DSW) to carry out a clean-up on Kenville Road where dumpers had used a local park to dispose of material illegally.

THE Kenville/Sea Cow Lake Ratepayers Association voiced their frustration and anger last week over an increase of illegal dumping in the area.

The association had called in Durban Solid Waste (DSW) to carry out a clean-up on Kenville Road where dumpers had used a local park to dispose of material illegally.

The upper section of the park has seen a mixture of building rubble and other industrial items dumped in a heap near the road and according to vice chairman of the ratepayers association, Anil Beekrum this has been ongoing for more than year.

“We feel the road closure of Kenville Road has contributed to this as the road is now much quieter. We’ve caught quite a few dumpers in the act and reported them or made them clean-up straight away. Sadly due to the closure and this section of the road being much quieter illegal dumping has continued during the evening,” Beekrum said.

Local resident, Rex Seemela echoed Beekrum’s sentiments saying he felt the area was being neglected by the municipality.

“This area is one of the oldest in Durban and the community needs the intervention of the City but has seen none of the services being rendered. Kenville Road is just one of many roads where fly-tippers have targeted. It is quite concerning as those engaging in illegal dumping don’t fear the repercussions. The community is tired of this and it’s a horrible reflection on the society we live in. Kenville Park could be utilized better for the children of the community,” Seemela said.
