IF anyone asked George and Brenda Crews what their secret to a long and happy marriage is, they firmly believe it is being honest with each other, caring for each other and showing respect to each other at all times.

The uMhlanga couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday with family and close friends.
“Brenda and I met in Rhodesia in 1970. She loved sport and she happened to be at a rugby match I was playing in,” said George.

In February 1971, the couple got engaged and, later that year, on October 2, they said ‘I do’ at a local church. There were 120 guests at the ceremony and the reception and dance were held at the Ambassador Hotel.

They then went to Mozambique for their honeymoon.

In 1974 George qualified as a chartered accountant the coupled moved to Johannesburg where they lived for 11 years, before moving to KwaZulu-Natal.

“We left Rhodesia with R5 000 and stayed with a friend for about two months. We then moved into our own flat and lived there for six months before we bought a house.

In those days R5 000 was a lot of money,” laughed Brenda.

George worked long hours to establish himself and, in 1986, the couple moved to Durban, which became their forever home.

“We have three lovely sons and eight gorgeous grandchildren.

“We have travelled a lot and visiting so many countries has opened our eyes to different cultures,” said George.
