VIDEO: Pregnant Green Mamba rescued in uMhlanga

The Green Mamba and its hatchlings will be released into a safe environment by local snake rescuer, Jason Arnold.

FINDING a highly venomous snake at your front door is every homeowner’s nightmare, and this became a recent reality for an uMhlanga resident.

Local snake man, Jason Arnold rescued a pregnant Green Mamba that sought refuge on the porch of the resident’s home.

“The homeowner sent me a cellphone picture of the snake, to positively identify it. Not only was the snake easy to identify as a Green Mamba, but I could also determine from the image, and the unusual behavior (being at ground level and going into a man-made structure), that the snake was also heavily pregnant and looking for a suitable place to deposit her eggs,” said Arnold.

“Although a scary situation for most, Green Mambas are actually surprisingly shy, gentle snakes, only becoming defensive and biting if they feel their life is in imminent danger. Given a little bit of space and respect, like all snakes, it will always choose flight over fight and will disappear into the garden as quickly as they appeared,” he said.
