Northlands Girls’ pays tribute to teacher killed in floods

The bodies of Kittensamy, her sister and her mother were recovered by rescue personnel on Tuesday.

STAFF at Northlands Girls’ High School have paid tribute to a teacher killed in the KZN floods.

Natasha Kittensamy, a Mathemetics intern at the school was killed after her house collapsed in Bonela following heavy rainfall in the province.

The bodies of Kittensamy, her sister and her mother were recovered by rescue personnel on Tuesday.

Principal of Northlands Girls’ High School Theven Reddy confirmed the news of her passing on the school’s Facebook page.

“It is with deep sadness that Northlands Girls’ High School announces the tragic loss of Miss Natasha Kittensamy, her mother and sister. Our thoughts and prayers are with Miss Kittensamy’s family and friends. May they rest in eternal peace,” Reddy said.

The death toll from the heavy rains and mudslides in the province surpassed 58 on Wednesday morning.

KZN premier Sihle Zikalala described the floods as one of the ‘worst weather storms in the history of our country’.

“The heavy rainfall that has descended on our land over the past few days, has wreaked untold havoc and unleashed massive damage to lives and infrastructure,” Zikalala said.

“Undoubtedly billions of rand worth of damage has been caused to homes, places of work, roads, bridges, electricity and water supply, and other critical government infrastructure. None of our districts has been spared, but eThekwini Metro has been the epicentre of this disaster with most of the rain and the worst damage.”

He added that the disaster has affected all races and sectors of society, including rural, townships, informal settlements, suburbs and luxury estates.
