FOR Miles and Bev Getkate, their 60-year marriage is a story that began with a high-school romance, long drives between Eshowe and Durban and a simple milkshake which then grew into a life centred around family, love and shared memories.

The couple recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary, surrounded by their family at a celebratory lunch.

They first met while Bev was in matric and Miles had already left school.

Miles would make the journey to fetch Bev in Eshowe, about 60km away, before taking her to Durban, a further 120km trip, simply to spend time with her and enjoy a milkshake. He would then drive her back to Eshowe.

After several dates, Miles became convinced that Bev was someone special. “After several dates, I was convinced that this lady was the woman I wanted to share my life with,” Miles recalled.

Their relationship was tested when Miles spent nine months in the army, away from Bev. Rather than weakening their bond, the time apart made their relationship stronger.

“When I returned, we got engaged and later married at the Anglican Church in Stanger,” said Miles.

Six decades later, their lives have revolved around their family. Together they have three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who have been at the heart of their journey.

For Miles and Bev, their children and grandchildren mean everything to them. Some of their happiest memories have been made as a family, while others have come from travelling and experiencing new places together.

The couple enjoyed overseas holidays, took their children to Cape Vidal and later made memories with their grandchildren in the Transkei.

Looking back over 60 years, they said their marriage has been unique and built on trust. They have stood by each other through the difficult times, while learning the importance of supporting and respecting one another.

Bev said Miles has remained true to his character throughout their six decades together.

“He is still the loving, caring person I met over 60 years ago and he is still my best friend after all these years,” said Bev.

Miles feels the same way about Bev and said he particularly admires her giving spirit and the way she cares for others.

For the couple, reaching their 60th anniversary means everything.

“Our advice to young couples is: don’t give up when differences arise. Divorce has become too easy an option,” said Bev.

“Couples should learn to work through their differences, show each other respect and compromise,” added Miles.
