Help Durban North book sellers reach sales target

Book sales have been steadily increasing since the Covid-19 pandemic and book sellers are calling on Durbanites to help pick up the pace.

DURBAN book lovers, the challenge is on. After smashing last year’s goal of collecting 10,052 donated books — honouring each day Nelson Mandela spent in prison — Durbanites went above and beyond, contributing over 20 000 books. Now, the focus shifts from donations to sales, with an ambitious new target: 25 000 books sold in 2025.

Street Lit booksellers are calling on the city to step up once again. With a stockpile of neatly sorted books ready for new homes, the challenge is simple — buy more books.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, book sales have been steadily increasing, from 14 000 in 2022 to 17 000 in 2024.

However, the pace needs to pick up. To hit the 25 000 mark, Durban’s 20 Street Lit booksellers must sell an average of 20 books per day, five days a week.

The booksellers have excellent books for sale, from thrillers, romance, and children’s books to cookbooks, self-help guides, dictionaries, Bibles, and prayer books — there’s something for everyone.

How can you help?

Buy a book – Treat yourself or gift one to a friend.
Support the booksellers – Look for the bright green branding and find vendors at locations such as: La Lucia Mall – Alvin Dube and China Shabalala, Pick n Pay Hyper by the Sea – Richard Nzima and Khanyisile Cele
Donate books – Quality, current, and good condition books are always welcome.

Contact Illa at books@denishurleycentre.org or message 083 326 3234 to arrange donations.
