Purchase cupcakes for a cause at north Durban shopping malls

Support National Cupcake Day at Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Oceans Mall and La Lucia Mall on Saturday, September 27. All proceeds go towards assisting children with cancer.

SHOPPERS across Durban will have the sweetest opportunity to make a difference on Saturday, September 27, when malls host National Cupcake Day in support of Cupcakes of Hope, an NPO raising awareness and funds for children with cancer.

National Cupcake Day has become a heartfelt tradition where volunteer bakers, families, and community members unite around something as sweet and simple as a cupcake.

Each sale contributes directly to helping young cancer patients with medical bills, transport to hospitals, and day-to-day needs. The initiative now supports more than 200 children every month.

At La Lucia Mall, co-ordinator Cheryl Samuel said the cause is deeply personal.

“This is close to home for me. I have witnessed what chemo and radiation can do to a person. Creating awareness about childhood cancer, and knowing we can help more children receive the treatment they need, makes me want to do more each year,” she said.

She described the experience as “overwhelming yet heartwarming,” recalling how last year a grandmother and her granddaughter, herself a brain tumour survivor, donated cupcakes together.

“She decorated the most beautiful character cupcakes because she wanted to help children just like her,” said Samuel.

At Gateway Theatre of Shopping and Oceans Mall, co-ordinator Michelle Manicum said it is “a privilege” to be part of the project.

“It’s using our skill in the kitchen to help. Something fun and delicious can make such a difference. The impact of this initiative has grown in leaps, and every year our bakers and volunteers show incredible loyalty to the cause,” she said.
