Video: The Oyster Box Hotel named Durban’s only 5-Star Premium establishment

The Oyster Box Hotel has earned South Africa’s elite 5-Star Premium status, making it Durban’s only hotel with this prestigious grading.

THE iconic Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga has been awarded a 5-Star Premium grading by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA), the highest recognition of hospitality excellence in the country and a bump up from its long-maintained 5-Star Standard.

This distinction places The Oyster Box among an elite group of just 23 establishments nationwide and makes it the only hotel in Durban to hold this status.

Philisiwe Gumede, General manager of The Oyster Box, expressed her pride in receiving the prestigious accolade at a stylish event held at the hotel earlier today (October 28).

“It is an incredible honour to lead The Oyster Box and to receive this 5-Star Premium recognition. Our guests are drawn to the hotel’s unique, timeless elegance, a blend of heritage and sophistication. We are excited about the future and remain committed to setting the standard for luxury hospitality in South Africa.”

The grading was officially confirmed by Bronwen Auret, Quality Assurance Officer at the TGCSA, who praised The Oyster Box for its commitment to excellence.

“This distinction is not easily achieved. It represents a benchmark of distinction that celebrates not only luxury and comfort, but also authentic, world-class service and attention to detail.”

She added that The Oyster Box is “more than just a hotel but also a symbol of heritage, luxury, and service excellence”.

The property’s reputation extends well beyond South Africa’s borders, having earned global recognition through awards such as the Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards, ranking it among the Top Hotels in Africa; TripAdvisor Travelers Choice Awards; and consistent inclusion among the most loved hotels in the world. All these have contributed to the hotel receiving 5-Star Premium status.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Reverend Musa Zondi, congratulated the team at The Oyster Box, stating that the achievement is a provincial triumph.

“The Oyster Box is a living piece of Durban’s coastal heritage,” said Zondi.

“It captures the essence of comfort, refinement, and timeless elegance. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the management, staff, and partners who made this possible. This recognition is not only a victory for The Oyster Box but for the entire province of KwaZulu-Natal.”
