Domino Foundation reopens babies’ home in Durban North after renovation
The Durban North NPO's baby home has finally re-opened. The facility, which cares for babies and toddlers in temporary safe care, had been shut since mid-winter due to structural damage caused by insects and weather.
THE Domino Foundation has officially reopened its Babies’ Home after a three-month closure for extensive repairs and renovation.

Board members, including CEO Steven van der Merwe and CFO Gavin Simpkins, addressed supporters at the reopening, outlining the home’s 20-year history. Since its establishment, the organisation has placed 182 children either back with their biological families or into permanent adoptive homes.
Two women who were cared for at the home in its early years attended the event. One of them, Noma Ndlovu, said returning to the facility where she spent her early childhood was an emotional experience.
“I am filled with so many emotions. I know the babies at Domino are well looked after because I experienced the caring myself. I cried and I cried when I had to leave when I got to be too old and was sent to long-term residential care village. I felt at home immediately when I came here today.”
Long-time staff member and crisis caregiver Precious Thabethe, who has worked at the home for more than two decades, thanked donors and supporters and noted that two additional projects are planned: renovations to the Crisis Home Cottage and rehabilitation of the on-site gardens.
“My heart was particularly happy to see two young ladies to whom we had the privilege of giving a safe, loving home, celebrating with us today the start to their lives we were able to give them.”
