North Durban cast brings magic of Christmas in song

CHARLES Dickens’ timeless tale of second chances comes to life in A Fairytale Christmas Carol, the Musical, presented by the Young Performers Project at the Playhouse Drama Theatre from December 5 to 21.

This original, family-friendly adaptation blends beloved fairytale characters with the classic story of Scrooge’s transformation.

The Big Bad Wolf (James Armstrong, ISPA) takes on the Scrooge role, visited by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Midas and the magical trio of Christmas Past, Present and Future played by the Fairy Godmother, Old King Cole, and the Queen of Hearts. Through their guidance, he discovers that redemption — and joy — are still within reach.

Directed and choreographed by Daisy Spencer, with musical direction by Des Govender, the production features design by Kathy Singery, Nicolene Steyn, Anthony Govender and Dylan Heaton, and includes assistant creatives Damien Butt and Jenna van Eyssen (ISPA). The score mixes original songs with favourite carols and a few surprises.

Now in its 24th year, the Young Performers Project continues its mission to train the next generation of theatre artists.
This year’s cast of 80 performers from 45 KZN schools selected from over 300 auditionees ranges from age nine through high-school level and has rehearsed over seven weekends.

Tickets through Webtickets. Show runs for 75 minutes, including one interval.
