Briardene children treated to fun day

For many of the children, especially those affected by the Briardene fires earlier this year, the fun day served as a positive distraction.

TREE ECD Centre was transformed into a riot of colour, music and laughter last Saturday as hundreds of children poured in for the 2025 Durban North Community Kids Fun Day.

The event, which drew massive crowds from across the community, offered a day of fun that included face painting, jumping castles, food stalls, ice creams, DJs, beat boxers, dancers and an array of local artists.

Event organiser Sam Reddy said the turnout and energy exceeded expectations.

“Seeing so many children smiling, playing and just being carefree was incredibly moving. This day was about joy, healing and reminding our kids that their community is here for them and we truly felt that vibe everywhere,” he said.

A significant contribution came from co-sponsors Bluff Meat Supply and Help Me SA, whose support ensured that every attending child received a gift and a book to take home. Reddy said their generosity made an enormous difference.

“They helped us make sure no child walked away empty-handed. That kind of support is what builds a stronger community,” he added.

The event also drew on the support of numerous community partners, including SJ Volunteers, Round Table of Umhlanga 155, Durban North Lions Club, The Print Shop, and several other organisations and volunteers who dedicated their time and talents to the day’s success.

One of the standout highlights was the Durban North Fire Department’s wildly popular foam party, which turned the grounds into a cloud of bubbly excitement and sent children racing joyfully through the foam. Dance-offs, live performances and hands-on activity stations kept spirits high throughout the day.

“So many of these kids have been through tough times. To give them a day where they could just feel happy and safe is something we’ll always be proud of,” said Reddy.
