Northglen News journo shares her top 3 stories for 2025

Since we're in the spirit of Christmas and feeling all warm and fuzzy, Northglen News journalist Candyce Pillay shares three stories which tugged at her heart's strings this year.

And that’s a wrap – 2025 is done and dusted and let me tell you, it has been a newsworthy year.

While I have enjoyed reporting on so many stories this year, a few stand out for me; and of those few I’ve had to narrow it down to three which align with my passion for positive, motivational local news.

Umhlanga foundation opens ‘new doors’ for family

This story was nothing short of uplifting. I captured the emotional journey of Ncebakazi and her daughter Aliza Dotwana, who finally received the keys to their own home thanks to The Gifted Project and supportive partners. After years of hardship — including living in an informal settlement and seeking medical care for little Aliza, who is both blind and deaf — the family’s story culminated in a life-changing moment when they took ownership of a renovated property designed to give them security and dignity. I met this family in 2022 and if ever there’s a story that screams ‘don’t give up’, it’s this one. This mom stopped at nothing to make sure her daughter received the medial treatment she deserved. She then met a lawyer, Lea Wimble, who sponsored Aliza’s school fees and through her businesses foundation, purchased a home for Ncebekazi and Aliza!

Glen Anil employee grows from guard to farmer

Another uplifting piece I wrote is that of Yandisa Gilo, once a security guard at a Glen Anil agricultural company,  who transformed his life and career into that of a successful hydroponic farmer, educator, and community mentor. Three years ago, his employer allowed him to learn about modern, soil-free farming — a spark that ignited his passion and led him to teach himself hydroponic techniques using online resources and hands-on practice. Today, Gilo not only runs his own hydroponic setup growing leafy greens and fruiting plants  but was nominated for a South African Agricultural Award in the Agricultural Development and Community Empowerment category.

Babies home in Parkhill grateful for community support

The Ray of Hope Babies Home has been a place that’s close to my heart. The year 2025 has been one of milestones for them, including placing four babies into permanent families and expanding services like occupational and speech therapy for those in care. The story speaks of the incredible generosity of the local community — from Mandela Day donations to ongoing volunteer involvement — which helped the home provide nurturing support throughout the year. The story highlights compassion in the North Durban area.

I am Candyce Pillay – fun, energetic and always positive. Community journalism has been a part of my life for 18 years – something I always say with pride when I am asked. As a journalist, I am forever the favourer of the underdog. When I am not penning the latest human interest piece, crime or municipal bit, and occasionally a sports update, you can find me in the place I love most – at home with my beautiful family – cooking up a storm, soaking up the sun with a gin and tonic in hand or binge-watching a good series or documentary.
