How you can ‘step’ up for school children
Back-to-school shoe initiatives by FNB, PEP and SPAR are helping families save as the new school year begins.
AS the new school year begins, thousands of families across South Africa are feeling the familiar pressure of back-to-school costs. From school shoes to stationery, the basics quickly add up; and for many households, they remain out of reach.

If you’re in a position to assist, several organisations are once again stepping forward to help ensure learners start the year with dignity, confidence and the tools they need to succeed, and it all starts with a pair of shoes.
This year, FNB and PEP have revived their popular back-to-school shoe initiative, helping qualifying families access school shoes at a drastically reduced cost.
The campaign allows qualifying customers to purchase a pair of school shoes for just 99 cents. To qualify, customers need to spend R300 or more (excluding school shoes) in a single transaction at any PEP clothing store and pay using an eligible FNB card. Then scan a PEP+ more rewards digital card at checkout. Once these steps have been followed customers can either buy Student Prince synthetic school shoes for 99c, or receive a discount of R139 off any other school shoe.
Similarly, SPAR South Africa, in partnership with Bata, continues its commitment to education through its school shoe campaigns. By offering quality school shoes at highly subsidised prices, SPAR is helping caregivers stretch their budgets while also encouraging customers to be part of a broader culture of giving. As part of the campaign, 500 000 pairs of school shoes will be available for just R70 to customers who spend R350 or more in SPAR South Africa stores and use their SPAR Rewards card.
