Durban North service club supports learners with shoes, supplies
Organisers say the club’s stationery drive operates year-round and welcomes donations from residents at any time.
THE Lions Club of North Durban continued its community service mission last Saturday, distributing much-needed stationery, shoes and school supplies to learners in the north Durban area as part of its ongoing stationery and shoe drive.

The initiative, which saw donations from the Lions Club and individual community members, provided 50 children with new school shoes, colour pencils, glue sticks, tape, erasers, pencil cases and backpacks.
Recipients were identified by community leaders, educators and ward committee members as children in greatest need, representing nine schools in the area.
At the handover event, District Governor of Lions Clubs International District 410E, Avril Hobbs, highlighted the depth of need in the community.
“There’s such a need in the community. We don’t see it but it’s there, and we live by our motto: where there’s a need, there’s a Lion,” she said, adding that while stationery are always welcome, the need for shoes remains especially urgent.
“We’d love to help more children should we get more donations,” Hobbs said.
The Lions Club of North Durban has a long tradition of service, having been chartered in 1967 and serving the Durban North, La Lucia and surrounding communities ever since.
As part of Lions Clubs International, the club operates within a global network of volunteers committed to addressing community challenges and improving lives.
Over the years, the club has undertaken a variety of projects beyond school support, including food collections, relief efforts in times of crisis, and initiatives to support youth and families. Its members were also visible in relief efforts following recent fires that affected informal settlements in the greater Durban area, showcasing the club’s readiness to respond in emergencies.
The club’s stationery drive remains open year-round, with organisers urging residents to donate supplies at any time.
Donations of stationery can be facilitated through Hobbs and other members, ensuring that the club can continue its mission of helping children start the school year with dignity and the tools they need to learn.
