Rotary Club president Cohan Arjoona said the organisation was proud to honour a journalist whose work has consistently uplifted the community.
“Candyce exemplifies the true spirit of vocational service through her dedication to ethical journalism and her commitment to keeping our community informed, connected and inspired. She has also played a significant role in getting the name of the Rotary Club of Umhlanga out into the wider community, ensuring our projects and service efforts receive the visibility they deserve,” said Arjoona.
“Her professionalism, integrity, and ongoing support of community service make her a most deserving recipient of this award. We congratulate her and thank her for the positive impact she continues to make.”
The award celebrates individuals whose work reflects Rotary’s core principle of Service Above Self, recognising Pillay’s role in highlighting community initiatives and giving visibility to the organisation’s projects and service efforts.
Pillay said she was humbled by the recognition.
“As a journalist, it is an honour to serve a community that values truthful, timely and responsible reporting,” she said.
“Being acknowledged by the Rotary Club of Umhlanga reinforces why I do what I do. My goal has always been to keep residents informed and connected, and I’m grateful to be trusted with telling the club’s and the community’s stories.”
Jean Gibson, principal of Christopher Robin Pre-Primary School, was recognised for her unwavering dedication to education and for always opening her doors and heart to support the Rotary Club of Umhlanga’s initiatives.
