Lifesavers’ expo/open day rocks uMhlanga

The event was about showcasing what the Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club is all about.

UMHLANGA Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club (Rox) member Andrea Botha has hailed the club’s Open Day and Expo hosted over two weekends.

Botha said the event was about showcasing what the club was all about and they also partnered with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) on Sunday in a mock rescue exhibition.

The club also welcomed Cell C Sharks mascot Sharkie who entertained visitors and the young lifesavers.

“We were grateful to the community who came out and supported the events. We held a combined mock rescue exhibition with the NSRI planned where we had a surf rescue and a rescue with a vessel on fire, and that was successful. While we were hoping to attract new members, we also wanted to show that the club is more than just what you see with us doing drills on the beach. We are also actively involved in performing lifesaving duties to help keep bathers safe in the water,” Botha explained.

On Sunday, 12 members of the Rox master team were capped by the club for the ILS World Championships in Riccione, Italy.

They will represent South Africa at the world champs.
