Man arrested for stolen vehicle in Durban North offers bribe to officers

The suspect offered Armed Response officers a bribe of R15 000 to let him go before SAPS arrived.

A SUSPECT driving a vehicle believed to be stolen was arrested by Marshall Security in Durban North.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, on Sunday evening, an Armed Response officer spotted a suspicious white Nissan NP300 with no front plate parked on Adelaide Tambo Drive in the Durban North area.

“Our Armed Response officer found this suspicious and proceeded to obtain the vehicle’s registration from the rear number plate. Upon conducting a vehicle check with the SAPS Call Centre, it was established that the vehicle had been stolen earlier this month in the Tongaat area,” said Powell.

Powell says that backup armed response officers were immediately dispatched to assist.

The driver of the vehicle, who had first denied knowing the vehicle was stolen, offered the response officers a bribe of R15 000 cash to let him go before the SAPS arrived.

“Our Armed Response officers immediately apprehended the driver before he could make an escape and waited for the SAPS to assist. The suspect, who will be charged with being in possession of suspected stolen property, together with the stolen vehicle, was handed over to the Durban North SAPS for further investigation. The R15 000 cash bribe was also confiscated and booked into evidence at the police station,” he said.
