Chelsea Preparatory School learner praised for firefighting heroics

The nine-year-old boy has been praised for being instrumental in curbing a fire which broke out at a farm on the South Coast where his father is employed.

A CHELSEA Preparatory School learner’s holiday in Ramsgate took an unexpected turn recently after a fire broke out at the farm where his dad is employed.

Luke Moldenhauer, who is in Grade Three, heard a crackling sound and immediately knew that something was wrong. Little did he know, though, that his keen sense of hearing would lead him to experience something life-altering.

“Our family was enjoying a serene morning on the veranda of the farmhouse when Luke’s acute sense of hearing caught a peculiar crackling noise. Luke speculated that it might have been the sound of banana leaves rustling or the hooves of an impala dashing through sticks,” said his mother, Carol Moldenhauer.

Intrigued, they embarked on a walk to trace the origin of the noise, and were stunned to find a rapidly spreading fire.

Without hesitation, Luke and the 14-year-old son of the farm manager, sprang into action, following established firefighting protocols.

In a heartwarming display of camaraderie and determination, Luke, his father David, the farm manager and his son joined forces to combat the spreading blaze while awaiting reinforcements.

In a testament to the power of swift response and community support, Farm Watch and a water truck arrived on the scene.

Together with the arriving reinforcements, the team grew to a resolute group of seven men and two boys, all driven by a singular mission: to quell the flames and safeguard their property.

Their combined efforts, armed with determination and a sense of duty, persisted for a tense 54 minutes before the fire was finally extinguished and crop damage was minimised.

Amidst the challenges posed by smoke, searing heat, and physical exhaustion, Luke demonstrated unwavering resolve, adhering to firefighting protocols and embodying the spirit of a true hero.

“We are all so proud of Luke. He didn’t hesitate to fight the fire. He jumped into action and followed all the rules for fighting farm fires. He didn’t give up until it was all over. His takkies were melted and destroyed. He was smoky, very hot and thirsty,” said a proud Carol.

Luke Moldenhauer’s remarkable actions serve as an inspiration to all, illustrating the transformative impact that courage and determination can have in the face of adversity. His bravery and quick response in the direst of situations shine a light on the potential for heroism in every individual, regardless of age.

The owner of the farm, Quentin Elliot, thanked Luke for his assistance in dousing the flames.

“Luke’s efforts were a big help to me, and they saved us a lot of damage to our macadamia nut trees. His hard work and dedication to helping and putting himself in harm’s way to do so are very much appreciated. Luke’s dad can be very proud of him for his willingness to help. Luke is a true asset to our community,” said Elliot.
