The spelling whiz received the words in June this year and immediately got to work dedicating her weekends and free time to diligently learning each one.
AN 11-YEAR-OLD learner from Effingham Heights Primary School is a spelling whiz, and she has the trophy to prove it.

Mithali’s journey in the spelling competition began at the circuit level. Her remarkable spelling skills and determination led her to secure the second position at the circuit level, a commendable achievement in itself.
“Throughout the year, my school holds various spelling bees so I gained experience from there. I also studied the words really hard after school and in my free time. I had to learn 1 000 words ranging from easy to difficult,” said Mithali.
She continued to excel and progressed to represent the Umgeni North Circuit at the District Level. It was at this stage that her exceptional talent truly shone as she claimed the first position in the Umlazi District.
Mithali proceeded to represent the Umlazi District at the provincial level, and once again, she emerged triumphant, securing the first position in the KwaZulu-Natal Province.
The final round took place about two weeks ago at Resmount Primary School in Reservoir Hills, but prior to that, Mithali participated in two other rounds. Some of the words were ‘rendezvous’, ‘abattoir’, ‘abalone’ and ‘zest’, and added to that, Mithali also had to learn dictionary words.
“I came first in the first round and then second in the next round. We were randomly asked to spell any of the words which we were given to learn. The word that won me first place was ‘hyacinth’,” she said.
The bright spark added that she had mixed feelings after winning.
“I was excited about winning, but I also felt sad for the learners who did not win. I mean, I wanted to win and motivated myself, but I was also ready if I lost. I told myself that this could go either way,” she said.
“I want to thank my educators, principal and family for always supporting me. This competition has taught me to always try my best and to keep trying until you finally get there,” said Mithali.
School principal Logan Pillay said Mithali had not only brought honor and glory to Effingham Heights Primary but has also emerged as a true ambassador of our school.
“Her dedication, hard work and conscientious approach have been exemplary throughout this journey. Mithali’s achievements are a source of pride for the school, and we look forward to witnessing her continued success in the future. She is a shining example of what can be accomplished through hard work, determination and the unwavering support of the school community,” said Pillay.
