Newly elected Lions Club of Durban North president Grant Hobbs is calling on the community to get involved as he leads the club for the 2026/2027 Lions year.

With the theme “HEROES ASSEMBLE … LET’S SERVE!” and the motto “Every Hero Has a Purpose. Every Lion Makes a Difference,” Hobbs said leadership is about service, teamwork and making a meaningful impact.

“You don’t need to wear a cape to be a hero. Sometimes being a hero is simply giving your time, sharing a skill or asking, ‘How can I help?'” he said.

Hobbs aims to build on the club’s strong legacy while keeping it active, visible and responsive to local needs. Alongside Lions International’s global causes, he wants the club to continue supporting community initiatives and strengthen partnerships with volunteers and local businesses.

Encouraging more young people to get involved is also a priority. Hobbs said there are many ways to support the club, from volunteering and partnering as a business to becoming a member.

“Being a Lion is about being part of a team of people who want to make a difference, building friendships, getting involved in the community and having the opportunity to turn ideas into action.”

Upcoming projects include the Savages 21km race registration, the Lions Awareness Blood Drive, Law Enforcement Awareness Day and the Icon event. The club has also recently supported school shoe donations, fire victims, food collection drives and several community events.
