North Durban crèche receives beanies and blankets

The project has seen children in need receive knitted items since 2021.

BEFORE resigning from her desk job in the banking industry to set sail on a yachting adventure to distant horizons, Dalene Cockbain was determined to show a farewell act of love for the 35 little learners of Little Genius ECD Centre, one of the 64 crèches partnering with The Domino Foundation’s Early Childhood Development Programme.

Dalene has had a knitting project in action with the First National Bank (FNB) Volunteers Coastal group who, every week since June 2022, have been making items for needy children across KZN.

To see her heart’s desire fulfilled, the industrious ladies set to crocheting blankets, beanies and scarves for the Amaoti preschoolers.

Why just as summer begins? Dalene answered with a smile, “I am going to have to get used to the weather changing suddenly out on the high seas. Even here on land, temperatures do suddenly drop, making it a nippy walk to school for these little ones. Besides, the blankets will make their midday nap-time much cosier and more comfortable.”

Nicky Walton, Domino’s Education Co-ordinator, had invited Dalene and her colleagues, Claudia Alexander and Shirlinee Davenhill, to join the centre for its Heritage Day celebrations.

The trio thoroughly immersed themselves in the fun of the day and treated their tiny hosts and hostesses to cupcakes.

“Dalene has established such a vibrant relationship between ourselves and FNB. We wish her happy seafaring with her husband and look forward to nurturing the very special relationship we already have with her fellow workers at FNB,” said Walton.

Walton invited other corporates to contact her (at 031 110 0730 or education@domino.org.za) to chat about ways in which they can partner with Domino to make a positive difference in the lives of the children on the NPO’s three education programmes.

She added that individuals and groups could also make a difference by either signing up as a direct debit donor for a monthly R250 or by making Domino one of the three beneficiaries they can have on their MySchool card.
