Durban North family cycles for charity

The father and son, who love training together, will cycle the aQuellé Tour Durban to raise funds for the Queensburgh Cheshire Home.

FATHER-AND-SON duo, Ashwin and Nikhael Tularam, will cycle the aQuellé Tour Durban next month all in the name of raising funds for charity.

The dental surgeons from Durban North have chosen the Queensburgh Cheshire Home as their beneficiary to not only raise much-needed funds but to also bring awareness to the organisation. The home has been caring for and supporting people with physical disabilities since 1965.

Speaking to the Northglen News, Ashwin said he and his son have been participating in cycling events for charity since Nikhael was five years old.

“Twenty-nine years ago, I cycled in the first aQuellé Tour Durban with Nikhael in a child seat attached to my bike. My family is involved in numerous charity events. It’s something that has also played an important part in our lives,” he said.

“It’s the cause that’s important – and creating awareness of the plight of these non-profit organisations. It’s not about the medal; it’s about the bigger gratification. I also encourage athletes to run for a cause and cyclists to cycle for a cause,” said Ashwin.

He also encouraged charities to get involved with these events and list themselves as beneficiaries.

Ashwin and Nikhael both regard health and fitness as a priority and train on weekends and whenever they have free time, mostly in the Blue Lagoon area.

Nikhael said he enjoys participating in cycling events alongside his father as it’s the perfect opportunity for them to leverage their love for sports while making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

“Additionally, our involvement in these events allows us to promote the importance of health and wellness, aligning with our profession’s commitment to overall well-being. Combining our passion for cycling with our dedication to charitable causes allows us to contribute to the betterment of our community while fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among participants,” said Nikhael.

“It’s an incredibly rewarding experience that strengthens our bond as a family. Cycling has always been a shared passion between us, and being able to pursue this hobby together while supporting charitable causes adds an extra layer of fulfilment to our relationship. Every pedal stroke becomes a symbol of hope, resilience and compassion. By riding for a cause, you have the power to transform the lives of those in need and uplift communities facing challenges,” he added.
