Spice up your palate at the chilli festival in Durban North

There are prizes to the value of R5 000 available for the chilli-eating competition entrants who make it to the top three. The competition starts at 14:00.

CHILLI enthusiasts are ready for the upcoming Great East Coast Chilli Festival which takes place at Northwood Crusaders Sports Club on Saturday, April 6, from 09:00 to 16:00.

Last week, a panel of judges sat down to select the winners of the artisanal sauce-making competition where chilli chefs submitted their sauces ranging from medium to super hot.

“Competition was hot and heavy, and the judges were particularly impressed with the submissions. The flavours were intense, followed by the right amount of heat. It was not easy to choose the cream of the crop,” said organiser Nick Papadopoulos.

The winners of the competition will be announced at the event at 10:00 and will receive certificates.

He said Bluff Meat Supply has come on board as the main sponsor of the event, which he and co-organiser Tanya Cowan are very excited about.

“There’ll also be a hot-wing eating challenge and, of course, our chilli-pod eating competition. Competitors are encouraged to enter beforehand, but entering on the actual day is allowed, too. Competitors will eat raw chilli pods, including the world’s hottest, the Carolina Reaper. So far, all entrants are novices,” he added.

“Food and chilli vendor stalls are booked so patrons can look forward to a wide variety of chilli products, such as sauces, chutneys, chilli merchandise, chilli oil and even chilli-infused products,” he added.

There is no entrance fee to the event, but the venue does charge a R20 parking fee. If you would like to get involved with sponsorship or find out more details, email hello@thegreateastcoastchillifest.co.za.
